Extra charges and option add-ons

Last updated: 17 October 2026

Charge for what your shoppers choose: $5 for an engraving, $4 or $10 for gift wrap. The charge is added to the product's price at checkout and shows on the order.

Add an extra charge

  1. Open an option set and choose a field.
  2. For a field without choices (text, text area, number, date, file upload, checkbox), type the amount in Extra charge. A checkbox is charged when it's ticked; the other fields are charged when the shopper fills them in.
  3. For a field with choices (dropdown, radio buttons, checkboxes), type an amount beside each choice that costs extra. Leave a choice empty to keep it free.
  4. Save. While the option set is Active, the product page shows each price next to its field or choice, plus "Your choices add …" for what the shopper picked.

Amounts are in your store's currency. Shoppers who browse in another currency see the amount converted at the same rate checkout uses.

Charges are per item

An extra charge is added once for each item. A shopper who buys two engraved bottles pays the engraving twice. A one-time fee per order isn't available.

The "(option add-on)" products

So that the charge shows on the order as its own line, the app creates one hidden product for each field that has an extra charge, for example "Engraving text (option add-on)". You'll find these in your Products list:

  • They're on no sales channel, and shoppers can't buy them on their own.
  • They're tagged datima-option-add-on.
  • Inventory isn't tracked.
  • The app renames, reprices and deletes them as you edit your option sets. A field that loses its last price, or an option set you set to Draft or delete, loses its add-on product.

Keep them. Deleting an add-on product stops its charge until you save the option set again; the app then creates it again. Edit charges in the app, not on the product.

When prices aren't live yet

If Shopify doesn't accept a change straight away, your option set is still saved, and the editor shows "Prices aren't live yet". Until the prices are live, shoppers see that option set without prices and pay nothing extra, so nobody is charged a price they didn't see. The app keeps trying in the background; Try again retries at once.

Changing a price

A new price applies from the moment it's live. A shopper who already has the product in their cart pays the new price at checkout, and the product page shows it when reloaded.

Limits

  • 20 field labels. Across all your Active option sets that have an extra charge, fields can use at most 20 different labels. "Gift wrap" used in three option sets counts once. Draft option sets don't count.
  • Size. Very large option sets with many priced choices can be too large for checkout. The editor says so when you save, so you can remove some priced choices or set an option set to Draft.
  • About 20 personalised lines per cart. Shopify limits how much the app can add to one cart in a single step. A cart line is one product with one set of answers (two identical engraved bottles are one line). In a cart with more than about 20 lines carrying extra charges, checkout still works, but that cart's extra charges are left out.

Other apps' fields on a line with an extra charge

When a product's line carries an extra charge, the order keeps this app's answers on it. Fields another app or your theme adds to the same line aren't carried onto the order for that line. Lines without an extra charge keep everything.

New permissions

Extra charges need two permissions the app didn't ask for before: to create the add-on products and to add the charges at checkout. If you haven't approved them, the editor asks you to reopen the app, and Shopify shows the approval.

If you uninstall the app

The app's checkout rule stops with the app, so no extra charges apply. The "(option add-on)" products stay in your Products list; you can delete them (filter by the tag datima-option-add-on). If you reinstall, the app picks your extra charges up again.
